ISM’s Junior Varsity (JV) teams often have senior athletes. Despite the heavy workload that is imposed on these busy seniors and many other commitments on their plate, they manage to be active contributors to their teams, just like all the underclassmen. But if it’s not the Varsity recognition, what is it the driving force that keeps the senior JV athletes going?
Senior JV Rugby player Jacob Hobbins shares his story. He states,
“I played for Varsity Rugby in my junior year when I had less work, but this year, with workloads mounting up, I realized it would be very difficult to maintain a balance. However I still really love playing rugby and the camaraderie, and I find that doing a sport makes me a happier person, so I thought I’d turn out for JV! Travelling isn’t a big deal for me, I just love the sport!”
Megan Johnson, a senior on the JV soccer team says that,
“I have been playing soccer since the 3rd grade and it is my favorite sport. I think it is important to stay active and play soccer as a means of relieving stress. I mainly enjoy soccer and love getting to know people across the grade levels. JV is a perfect place to be if you are looking for fun, stress relief, exercise and comradeship.”
Another senior Janesa Hill on the JV soccer team has a slightly different take on the matter. She reveals that,
“I do not have that big of a workload primarily because I take junior classes, so I am an anomaly in the senior batch. I simply just love being able to get out there and exercise.”
Because most seniors value other commitments more than playing for JV teams, the ones persevering must be praised. At the end of the day, there is much more to sports than just travelling or Varsity jackets; it’s to do with one’s passion. Just as one senior JV basketball player Gel Echiverri believes,
“I play because of my passion for the sport, and playing basketball itself refuels my passion for it.”
