On September 20, 2023, ISM students in the annual Battle of the Bearcats (BOB) showcased their most awaited event – BOB Dance, also known as “So You Think You Can Dance.” Held in the Little Theatre, the So You Think You Can Dance competition is one of the biggest events of BOB, with students competing with their self- choreographed 5 minute dance routines.
Each grade level competes with a maximum of 15 dancers performing anything from duets to group acts. A unique requirement of the competition is that each team must include at least one male and one female dancer.
“As the event unfolded, the seniors stole the show. Despite their ‘challenges in finalizing their music just days before BOB,’ as Sofie Acuna, one of the senior dance mentors, acknowledged, their use of trendy songs like 24k Magic by Bruno Mars and HEY MAMA of David Guetta and Nicki Manaj “hyped up the crowd,” showcasing a wide genre of dances, ultimately earning them the title of champions for this year’s BOB Dance Competition. Sofie shared that their victory “was such a special moment, finally being able to win after dancing and editing for an online freshman BOB dance to an in-person BOB dance during my final year.” The seniors’ journey through the challenges of COVID-19 to in-person competitions further highlight the dedication of the batch in finishing first. The freshmen claimed second place, with the sophomores following closely in third, and the juniors securing fourth place.
Above all, what truly made the BOB Dance competition successful was the collaborative spirit among the high school students. With each grade level celebrating the talent and creative expression on display, BOB dance remains one of the most anticipated events of the day.
Congratulations to all the participating teams, with a special round of applause for the seniors for their victory! The event will live on in the Bearcat community.
