Often deemed “Fashion’s biggest night”, The Met Gala is arguably the most prolific and important of fashion events. Organized by Vogue at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute (colloquially known as “the Met’), countless people from all over the world tune in to see their favorite celebrities’ dazzling outfits.

This year, for the very first time, ISM has decided to host their very own Met Gala in honor of IASAS Dance, Drama, and Tech (DDT). ISM’s Fine Arts Council announced a theme of Cultural Fusion, encouraging students to pull up to the red carpet sporting traditional costumes and cultural attire to have their photo taken and be interviewed, just like the actual event.

Because this is ISM’s first (hopefully one of many) Met Gala,  BT interviewed some of the Fine Arts Council members who brought this event to life for all the delegates.

“What inspired FAC to do a Met Gala for this CulCon?”

Nikki Go: “FAC originally wanted to have a general mini party to celebrate all the delegates, but we decided to base it off the Met Gala to make it more sophisticated, fun and up to interpretation.”

Alexis: “As this is our first time hosting IASAS Dance-Drama-Tech post-pandemic, the Fine Arts Council wanted to create an event that would function as a social gathering for the IASAS delegates as well as celebrate their hard work and dedication to the arts.”

“If this goes well, can we expect it to be a yearly tradition?”

Jordano: “I HOPE. But next year another school will host Dance-Drama-Tech, so hopefully they put the same amount we have been!”

Alexis: “Of course! It is always fun to get dressed up and all. We too should have the opportunity to walk the red carpet and have our photos taken just like celebrities.”

“Would a Met Gala ever expand to other IASAS events, or would it be only for CulCon?”

Nikki: “Since FAC is only in charge of the CulCon side of IASAS, we can’t speak for the others. It’s really up to them, though it would be nice if it could be a social event just for CulCon.”

“Could you explain this year’s theme and why you chose it?”

Ilyas: “It gives delegates the opportunity to represent their cultures and act as a nice way to introduce it as a continued tradition”

Jordano: “Well sometimes schools will come up with a theme for their dance and drama performances but these themes are always different for each school, so we couldn’t do something specific to the performance, that’s when we decide “hey, let’s embrace these differences,” and we made our theme cultural fusion.”

And now, the most important questions, what will our council members wear, and who will be the best dressed? ISM has also decided to have an award ceremony and competition between the schools to see which IASAS is the most fashionable, so the stakes are extra high!

“What are you planning to wear?”

Nikki: “Probably a Cheongsam [a traditional Chinese dress].”

Ilyas: “I might use aspects of my culture [Ilyas is Kyrgyz] with a modern twist and blending some ideas of Filipino culture.”

“Who do you think will be the best dressed?”

Nikki: “i feel like everyone is gonna say themselves, (especially Jordano) but honestly, me or Coco because she’s just better like that you know?

Alexis: “I think that Manu would be the best dressed out of FAC. As he is part of IASAS Drama, I’m sure he can use cool props and costumes from his play.”

Ilyas: “Probably Nikki Go”

Jordano: “I won’t be there because I’ll be in forensics IASAS, but if I was, for sure me.”

If you would like to see our amazingly talented delegates take over the red carpet, and who will be crowned best dressed, be sure to tune in this Saturday at school! If you can’t make it, you can always head over to BT’s Instagram (@bambootelegraphism) or check our website. We hope to see you there!
