On January 24, 2026, at the annual online IASAS chess tournament, the International School Manila’s chess team secured first place once again, earning the gold medal for the fourth consecutive year and continuing a remarkable streak of dominance.
This year’s victory adds to ISM’s growing legacy in the tournament, proving that the team’s success is not a one-time achievement but the result of long-term dedication and practice. A senior, Benjamin, who has been part of the team since his freshman year, described their win as especially satisfying.
He explains why ISM’s chess team stays on top. According to Benjamin, “Having year-round training, we are able to stay relatively sharp instead of getting worse and then working from scratch.” The team also focuses heavily on preparation, playing numerous practice games and puzzles leading up to competitions.
The team faced early challenges during the competition, particularly in the opening round against Singapore American School, where ISM had an unexpectedly slow start. However, the players quickly adjusted their strategies, improving both their speed and decision-making as the tournament progressed.
Beyond trophies and medals, Benjamin also emphasized the personal and social value of chess. “One thing I enjoy about chess is the community it opens me up to within ISM, as there are many nice and smart people that are always trying to improve, and in that environment, growth is bound to happen.” He adds that chess has helped him trust his instincts and think quickly under pressure.
Overall, with four consecutive gold medals, the ISM IASAS Chess Team has set a high standard—and they have shown no signs of slowing down.
