After a short hiatus, the awaited public speaking clubs are back. Both forensics and debate, though two separate activities, are closely intertwined and combined to create the Forensics and Debate club (F&D), dedicated to the development of public speaking and communication. On the 4th of October, students will be invited to the AMR to discuss the two clubs and what they entail.

Forensics widely revolves around skills like interpretation and improvisation to convey the intended message or answer a given prompt. It puts particular emphasis on building a fun, fair, and competitive atmosphere where participants are eager to become confident critical thinkers. During these public speaking competitions, participants will choose to engage in one of the multiple different events offered which tackle their respective obligations, whether it be constructing speeches or reading out passages. Additionally, these can range from providing responses to current news questions to creative speeches stimulated by a phrase or singular word. The four main events under the forensics umbrella consist of Oral Interpretation, Impromptu Speaking, Original Oratory, and Extemporaneous Speaking. The first two events listed are often thought to contain more literary elements whilst the last two are more research based.

As for debate, this particular competition is often seen to be more structured and argumentative based. Debaters are encouraged to persuade an audience or judge through logical lines of reasoning and emotive devices. Individuals who have a knack for research and public speaking are bound to enjoy these activities.

In the upcoming weeks, a variety of different F&D activities will take place – all of which being preparation for the IASAS Cultural Convention, of which F&D is part, in early March at International School Bangkok (ISB). From October 9th – 13, the Forensics Bonanza will transpire – an informative way to learn more about the various activities. Additionally, next Thursday (12th of October) Debate will be having its first introductory meeting during lunch in Ms Hogwoods classroom. All students are encouraged to  attend!
