Shining a spotlight on individuality.

From November 11th to 15th, ISM celebrated Neurodiversity Week, a time when we embrace the uniqueness of each individual’s mind and celebrate the diversity that makes the school community special. Inspired by Temple Grandin’s words, “The world needs different kinds of minds to work together,” this initiative goes beyond raising awareness—it is about fostering understanding and appreciating the beauty in how differently each of us thinks, learns, and interacts with the world.

Neurodiversity Week is a global movement aimed at promoting understanding and inclusion for individuals with diverse neurocognitive differences, such as autism, ADHD, and dyslexia. This week encourages everyone to recognize the value of diverse ways of thinking and to appreciate that every mind interprets the world uniquely. Embracing neurodiversity highlights the strengths, talents, and perspectives of all individuals, as well as reminders of how differences are essential for fostering an empathetic and inclusive society.

At ISM, Neurodiversity Week is a time to build a more inclusive community where every student feels valued and understood. By exploring different ways of thinking, it encourages empathy and open-mindedness. One student shared, “We often assume everyone thinks like us, but Neurodiversity Week reminds us that’s not true. It helps us appreciate that everyone brings a unique point of view, which makes our world richer and more vibrant.” This week is an invitation to look beyond assumptions, ask questions, and be curious about how others experience life. Diversity is not just something to tolerate—it is something to celebrate.

Various clubs hosted events and activities celebrating neurodiversity. For example, the Stepping Stones Club hosted an interactive neurodiversity workshop on November 15th with children from the Stepping Stone Foundation. Activities like Just Dance and relay games such as patintero, and popcorn tag made the day an exciting experience for both ISM students and young participants from the foundation. Physical activities like these serve as powerful, hands-on methods of breaking down communication barriers, fostering connections, and highlighting the importance of neurodiversity in action. A Stepping Stones club member shared her perspective: “Organizing these activities has been so rewarding. It’s amazing to see how much joy these events bring to the kids. It’s also a reminder of how much we can learn from each other.” Workshops like these bring the message of Neurodiversity Week to life.

The Sustainability Council also hosted a waste management workshop in partnership with the Stepping Stones Club. This activity taught children the importance of trash segregation and introduced them to the different types of waste bins around the school. By involving the Stepping Stone Foundation’s young participants in these activities, the Sustainability Council is embedding environmental consciousness into Neurodiversity Week, reflecting ISM’s commitment to an inclusive education that champions both social and environmental values.

Building on the celebration of inclusivity across ISM, elementary students are also engaging with neurodiversity in meaningful ways. Second-grade students took part in a special Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) session designed to explore what makes each person unique and the importance of embracing those differences. Inspired by the Filipino concept of ‘kapwa,’ meaning ‘shared identity,’ which signifies interconnectedness, the lesson plan encouraged students to reflect on their individuality and how diversity enriches their lives. By connecting neurodiversity to the Filipino concept of “kapwa,” which emphasizes shared identity and interconnectedness, the lesson highlighted that individuality enriches our collective understanding.

Adding to these efforts, the Visual Arts Club created art projects with the SS kids, reflecting the themes of neurodiversity and connection. Meanwhile, the Mental Health Awareness Club had engaging activities such as mood and emotion boards plus arts and crafts, which helped students learn emotional regulation and express themselves creatively. These initiatives highlighted the importance of empathy and inclusivity, fostering a more compassionate community.

Fostering inclusivity during Neurodiversity Week is not just about activities but also about meaningful reflections. A planned podcast in collaboration with the Mental Health Awareness Club and Bamboo Telegraph Video will provide an opportunity for club members to share their thoughts and experiences as a reflection on the week’s events. This initiative highlights the importance of pausing to engage in open conversations about neurodiversity and mental health, encouraging a culture of understanding and inclusivity. Additionally, an upcoming podcast episode, produced by Mr.McCarthy, will be shared on the school’s YouTube channel. This episode promises to offer valuable insights and reflections on neurodiversity, serving as a thoughtful way to wrap up the week’s celebrations. Keep an eye out for its release!

Adding a splash of personal expression, students were also encouraged to participate in themed dress-up days that allowed them to express themselves through their clothing. Each day features a unique theme, offering a symbolic way to recognize the beauty of diversity.  Monday started with students wearing their most comfortable clothes to celebrate sensory-friendly fashion and promote the idea that comfort and inclusivity go hand in hand. On Tuesday, it was ‘Quirky Hat Day,’ which recognized that each person’s mind is unique and that everyone thinks in different ways. Wednesday brought ‘Tie-Dye Day,’ celebrating the colorful spectrum of the human mind with clothing. On Thursday, students dressed up to show something they loved, showcasing individual passions, interests, and identities. Lastly, Friday rounds out with students wearing a color that represents them, encouraging students to express their true selves and celebrate personal identity. Through these dress-up days, a playful yet meaningful layer is added to Neurodiversity Week celebration, reminding the ISM community that self-expression is an important aspect of embracing neurodiversity.

In celebrating Neurodiversity Week, ISM fosters an environment where differences are not only accepted but embraced, celebrating and valuing each individual. Neurodiversity is more than just a concept; it is an approach to education and life that emphasizes understanding, acceptance, and compassion. Embracing neurodiversity means recognizing that each person’s unique mind has something valuable to contribute to the world. As Neurodiversity Week draws to a close, the ISM community is reminded that true inclusion starts with recognizing and appreciating the infinite variations of human experience. By celebrating neurodiversity, ISM is building a community that values each person for who they are — unique and essential contributors to a vibrant community.
