On Thursday, September 17, the junior class participated in one of BOB’s best-known events, So You Think You Can Dance? The competition was choreographed by Dance Company (ISM’s Varsity Dance Team) and coordinated by each grade’s dancers.
The juniors delivered an impressive performance, earning the loudest applause and cheers from the audience. While overall BOB winners are determined by spirit points through batch unity and cheering, BOB Dance focuses on performance quality. The juniors seemed to be the favorites to win once all the dances had been presented.
At the end, the spirit point and gold winners were announced, with the gold being awarded based on choreography. The seniors took first place in both, followed by the freshmen and sophomores, leaving the juniors in last place. After working hard on the performance, the junior team was disappointed to hear the news. The other dancers and the audience shared a similar feeling, as the result felt unexpected.
Junior choreographer Heidi expressed, “Even though we were quite shocked and a little disappointed, I think we can be proud of the effort we put in and everything we accomplished as a team, regardless of the result.” She elaborated, “If anything, this loss motivates us more to come back next year even stronger!” Their determination and performance are admirable, showcasing their batch’s spirit.
“We were looking at cohesion and how the dancers worked together in the synchronization of the dance,” said BOB Dance judge Ms. Wang. Judges also considered how well the performance fit into the school environment: “We also are looking at how school-appropriate the dances are because we are, after all, a school,” she explained.
Nonetheless, students look forward to next year’s event as an opportunity to display their talent and unity.
