ICARE (International Community Actively Responding to the Environment) is a rewarding experience for all high school students at ISM. It provides an opportunity to contribute to the Filipino community and environment positively.
Done through various service activities, students learn more about the Philippines and its culture. ICARE is a community-based service trip that goes on for 4 days, running from December 9 to 13. The program allows students to collaborate with students from a variety of grade levels and encourages them to venture out of their comfort zone to solve problems targeting specific U.N. Sustainable Development Goals.
There are 30 sites offered in both the provinces and the city. Each site is unique and enjoyed by many students. ECO ICARE, in particular, has been a favorite of students due to the snorkeling. Another favorite is Botolan Farming, where the beaches are “so beautiful”, according to junior Nina.
ICARE attendance is mandatory for all students to complete the graduation requirement for service. It is also a popular CAS project choice among the juniors and seniors who take the IB program.
CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service) requires students to investigate an issue, prepare a service plan, implement the plan, and reflect on it throughout their experience. All students are required to submit a CAS reflection to recognize their growth and perseverance after the trip.
ICARE council member and sophomore, Landon shared his excitement, stating that ICARE is “special to me because of the connections I make.” He also noted how his “mindset on service has changed–it’s about having fun while making a difference.”
October 4, 2024, is when the site allocations get released, so keep an eye out and be ready to start preparations for ICARE!
