On Monday, November 10th, in-person classes at ISM were suspended as a powerful typhoon swept through the region, bringing heavy rains, strong winds, and flooding. Students and teachers attended online classes in order to stay dry and safe at home.
It was announced on Sunday, November 9 that Typhoon Uwan was approaching Luzon, and PAGASA had issued various warnings. Metro Manila was placed under Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal 3, prompting schools to cancel physical classes as a safety precaution.
Despite the sudden shift, students and teachers quickly adapted to the online setup. Teachers adjusted their lessons for the virtual format, using slideshows, breakout rooms, and short activities to keep students engaged.
Some students appreciated the chance to stay at home and rest, while others missed going to school and seeing friends in real life.
Esme, a high school student, shared her thoughts. “I was a little disappointed we couldn’t go to school, but it was nice to stay home and still learn safely.”
Overall, the online experience was a success, showing the community’s ability to stay connected and continue learning despite the storm. Classes ran smoothly, and students remained engaged throughout the school day.
Ms. Thompson, the school’s vice principal, says, “It was pretty seamless … we got all the teachers to report any possible problems and then our tech team made sure to fix those.”
By the next morning, the skies began to clear, and regular classes resumed on campus. The quick transition to online learning shows the ISM community’s flexibility against challenges, even when the weather takes an unexpected turn.
