This year’s Jazz Night was held on February 3 from 5:00-7:30 pm. With the theme “Lasting Legacies”, the event celebrated how jazz continues to influence generations, showcasing talent through performances from advanced dance, show choir, jazz band, and soloists.
Sophomore Heidi, who performed in both advanced dance and show choir, described the event as “a way to perform and showcase the talents of students, while also exploring old-fashioned songs that different generations would know.”
The idea of honoring the past while bringing it into the present reflected the night’s theme.
From first-time performers to those taking the stage one last time, it was an equally exciting experience for all. This was evident during the show, as each group brought energy and personality to the stage.
One highlight of the night was the advanced dance performance. The dancers used a mashup of Michael Jackson songs and embodied his dance style, honoring his lasting legacy in both music and dance. The jazz style was visible across performances, from choreography to stage presence.
“In singing, we tried to do movements like snaps and jazz hands that were generally used in traditional jazz performances,” Heidi explained. “In dance, we did a lot of jazzy steps!”
Overall, Jazz Night served as both a performance and a tribute to the artists and styles that shaped modern music and dance, reminding the audience that the legacies of jazz and student creativity continue to live on.
