Friday, September 20: High school students, teachers, and parents alike gathered to participate in one of ISM’s most anticipated events of the year: Battle of the Bearcats. This all-encompassing event encourages grade levels to unite and support each other through a series of events, ranging from boat races under the radiant sun of the HS field to games of Jeopardy under the spotlights of the Little Theater. However, the one who gets the coveted trophy is not the one with the most gold medals, but rather the group who shows the most spirit towards their own and other grades. BOB is not a day where grade levels pit themselves against each other; it is rather the opposite – to unite.
After a long day, the results were announced at the closing ceremony in the HS gym. The sophomores, Class of 2027, earned the most number of spirit points, thus securing the win. Their victory will remain a historical moment in ISM history, as it was the first time sophomores had won BOB.
Their early success may have been shocking to others, but no one could deny that they had put great efforts towards securing the victory. Oscar, a sophomore who is one of the Tri-M members who performed at BOB, noted that “it was good because we were united and had strong chant groups.”
Just a couple of points behind the sophomores were the seniors. Knowing that it was their last BOB, the seniors also demonstrated exceptional teamwork. With a 2-point difference, the juniors came in 3rd place. Junior council vice president Emilio states that they “showed high school that [they’re] a force to be reckoned with”, however, to improve they must “put aside [their] differences and come together as a batch”.
Last, came the freshmen, who are still adjusting to the hectic high school scene but had nevertheless shown great spirit and enthusiasm. “I see a lot of room for improvement, but since this was our first BOB it was pretty good,” Juju, a freshman, remarks. “We should all definitely be more engaged and give it our all next time,” she adds, motivated by the sophomores’ triumph. Overall, Battle of the Bearcats 2024 was a day full of surprises, and quality fun!
